Tournament Guide

Everything you need to know about the 2026 FIFA World Cup format.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams, an expansion from the previous 32-team format. The group stage draw is a crucial event that sets the stage for the entire tournament.

The Four Pots

To ensure a balanced draw, the 48 qualified teams are divided into four pots of 12 teams each. The pots are determined by the FIFA World Rankings. The highest-ranked teams, including the hosts, are placed in Pot 1, the next highest in Pot 2, and so on.

The Draw Process

The draw process is as follows:

  1. One team is drawn from each of the four pots to form a group.
  2. This process is repeated until all 12 groups of four teams are formed.

Constraints and Rules

To ensure geographic diversity, there are a few constraints:

  • No group can have more than one team from the same confederation, with the exception of Europe (UEFA).
  • Each group can have a maximum of two teams from UEFA.

For the 2026 tournament, the three host nations are guaranteed to be in Pot 1 and have been pre-assigned to specific groups to ensure they play their group stage matches in their home countries. Mexico is pre-assigned to Group A. Canada is pre-assigned to Group B. The USA is pre-assigned to Group D.

The tournament is played across 104 matches, culminating in the final in mid-July. For a detailed look at the match schedule and venues, visit our Venue Schedule page.

  • Opening Match Day: Thursday, June 11, 2026
  • Group Stage: Concludes on Saturday, June 27, 2026
  • Round of 32: Sunday, June 28, 2026 to Friday, July 3, 2026
  • Round of 16: Saturday, July 4, 2026 to Tuesday, July 7, 2026
  • Quarter-finals: Thursday, July 9, 2026 to Saturday, July 11, 2026
  • Semi-finals: Tuesday, July 14, 2026 and Wednesday, July 15, 2026
  • Bronze Final: Saturday, July 18, 2026
  • World Cup Final: Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium

Group Stage

The group stage features a round-robin format, where each team plays against the other three teams in their group once.

Point System

  • Win: 3 points
  • Draw: 1 point
  • Loss: 0 points

Advancement

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will automatically advance to the knockout stage. In addition, the 8 best-performing 3rd place teams will also qualify for the knockout stage.

Tiebreaker Rules

In the round-robin and tournament formats, the tiebreaker criteria are as follows:

  1. Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches (3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss)
  2. Greatest goal differential in all group matches
  3. Most goals scored in all group matches

Should two or more teams still have equal rank after criteria 1–3 are applied, then the following criteria are used:

  1. Greatest number of points obtained in all matches amongst the concerned teams
  2. Greatest goal differential in all matches amongst the concerned teams
  3. Most goals scored in all matches amongst the concerned teams
  4. Most goals scored away from home in all matches amongst the concerned teams
  5. The best team conduct score using the following table:
    • First yellow card: –1 point
    • Second yellow card/indirect red card: –3 points
    • Direct red card: –4 points
    • Yellow card and direct red card: –5 points

Only one score will be applied to any player or team official in any match, e.g. a player who receives a second yellow card will only have –3 points applied and not –4 (–1 for the first and –3 for the second).

  6. Drawing of lots by FIFA

Knockout Stage

The knockout stage is a single-elimination bracket, where each match is a one-off game. If a match is tied after 90 minutes, it will go to extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
